This weekend was extremely predictable in terms of box office revenue, with the DreamWorks animated comedy “Kung Fu Panda” karate chopping the competition, Adam Sandler’s “Don’t Mess with the Zohan.” “Panda” scored an expected $60 million, but was surprising popular with those not in elementary school. It should rack up more bucks in the upcoming weeks before “Wall-E” dominates the box office charts and steals all of the under-18 crowd. “Zohan,” however, was dealt a lukewarm CinemaScore and critical reception. June 20th will see the premieres of Mike Myers’ “The Love Guru” and Steve Carell’s “Get Smart,” and will definitely spell an end to high intakes after next week. However, the upcoming action-packed weekend with the premieres of “The Happening” and “The Incredible Hulk” will allow lighter fare like “Zohan” and “Panda” to get by.
The rest of the top ten fell into place easily enough. In other news, indie sensation “The Visitor” is resting comfortably at #11. Being such a holdout on the chart, I can see potential award nominations coming its way in the distant future, but it is way too early to tell.
On a bad note, “Speed Racer” continues to decelerate, dropping from #7 to #13 and experiencing an 84% change. It brought in a paltry $432 per 855 theaters.
