The Time Traveler’s Wife

timetraveler

The movie The Time Traveler’s Wife has been heavily promoted on television these last couple of weeks, featuring frequent commercials with the sweeping cliche music and generic romantic drama scenes. I can’t say that the trailers appealed to me. I thought it was too reminiscent of a bad Nicholas Sparks adaptation with a touch of fantasy added. However, I recalled that the book which it is based upon was heavily praised, and that Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston quickly snapped up the rights to it. I decided why not read it before it comes out to see if it will be any good? I mean, the movie has Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana, even if the book totally blows, I’ll still see the movie.

What happened is that I quickly demolished the book, reading it in a span of a few days, even though I was extremely busy. Should have been studying for my summer session finals in microeconomics and business management, but it was not time wasted. The Time Traveler’s Wife is a modern day classic. It has instantly rocketed to the top of my all-time favorite novels. This is the perfect summer read. It has its comic moments, and certainly its fair share of steamy romance. However, this lighthearted and sizzling frivolity is weighted by the underlying tragic nature of the novel, the overall literature-like quality, and the well-written and well-researched text from the first-time author.

Style Hunter: Possible B-day Gift for Myself #2

Okay, I need your help with this one, blogosphere! I am head over heels for the heeled boots that Sally Hawkins wears in the little-seen British indie from last year, Happy-Go-Lucky. The play a minor role in the film, as they enrage the driving instructor who has a crush on her. I think they’re absolutely adorable, and I loved the fashion in that film. I love mixing bright colors and blinding those around me.

I can’t find any images, so here is a video. There’s the slightest glimpse of them at 3:26:

The worst part is, I cannot find those boots! I’ve sent an e-mail to Entertainment Weekly’s Style Hunter, but no such luck. Google was also unhelpful… =(

Style Hunter: Possible B-day Gift to Myself #1

The H. Stern "Love" keychain I'm dreaming of, featured in "Sex and the City: The Movie."

The H. Stern "Love" keychain I'm dreaming of, featured in "Sex and the City: The Movie."

My birthday is coming up this week, and I’m thinking of treating myself with something I wouldn’t ordinarily buy. This week I was flipping through Cinemax, and I caught Sex and the City: The Movie. I had seen it last year in theaters, and I was stunned by the fashion, like always. However, this time, I was really attracted to Louise’s “Love” keychain that she gives to Carrie, and the whole story about she carries love everywhere she goes as she looks for her love in New York. Adorable! Now I want it. H. Stern originally made it I think, and sold it for almost $7,000. Now I’m looking at Intuition’s $85 version or Seen On!’s somewhat cheaper looking $25 version. What do you think?

Are Chick Flicks a Dying Genre?

Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway in "Bride Wars"

Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway in "Bride Wars"

Recently, chick flicks have been taking a beating at the box office, and they’ve suffered harsh words from critics. For example, Bride Wars, led by rom-com superstars Kate Hudson (of the 2005 chick flick fave How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days) and Anne Hathaway (The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada)  should have been a massive hit; it did reasonably well with a $21 million weekend opening, but it received a pounding from movie reviewers. Plus, 27 Dresses, which opened in a similar slot the previous year, swept up $23 million and managed to gross more over its entire run than Bride Wars, even though Katherine Heigl and James Marsden arguably have less star power and box office draw.

As for recent releases, He’s Just Not That Into Youwas a hit, but it wasn’t really a typical rom-com chick flick- it was more of a romantic drama, a weird ensemble hybrid. Confessions of a Shopaholic fits into the typical rom-com mold, but it was a relative box office failure.

Also, there appears to be no major romantic comedies, or so-called chick flicks, lined up in the immediate future. The popularity of Judd Apatow movies has changed the comedymovie market, and it is moving from romantic comedies to more guy-centric, rowdy and raunchy humor- see the recent success of I Love You, Man- and to the comedy of Tyler Perry- see the recent success of Madea Goes to Jail. What does this mean? It appears the romantic comedy has fallen on hard times; more serious chick flicks may be thriving, but fluffy fare hasn’t been making a blip on the radar. It’s a shame because a good dose of laugh-heavy, optimistic, girly romantic comedies can uplift in dreary economic times when people are showing up in droves to movie theaters for affordable entertainment.
