Moths! Why Do They Want to Hurt My Pretty Clothes?

Image

Sure, they seem innocent and pretty, but they're not!

So, this is not technically fashion-related. Frankly, it’s a little gross and creepy. I think I have a moth problem.

At my old house, I frequently saw moths flying around, but there was never any damage to my clothing. I didn’t even know about mothballs and things.

Then about a week ago I found a relatively large hole in the back of a cashmere sweater. I’m not one to treat my clothes roughly, so I knew it wasn’t me who had done it. I suspected the dry cleaner.

And then I found several small holes near the sleeves of one of my Splendid cotton T-shirts. I thought moths only ate materials like cashmere and wool, but apparently they’ll much on anything organic, such as cotton.

Now I’m horrified that they’ll destroy anything in my closest or drawers. I’ve never seen any moths or bugs on or near my clothing, but I doubt that those holes were caused by wear and tear. The next step is trying to figure out what to do.

1) Freeze my clothing. This sounds like the easy and cheap thing to do, but I don’t think it would eliminate the problem long-term.

2) Good old-fashioned moth balls. But do those chemcials cause cancer or lung damage or something?

3) Lavender or cedar. Smells good, but not effective forever. And it’s expensive.

What to do, what to do?
